FNB Eswatini has intensified its investment in human capital after launching a comprehensive leadership development programme designed to build a stronger management pipeline, improve employee engagement, and reinforce the bank’s long-term growth strategy.
The initiative, branded the ‘World Class Manager’ programme, comes at a time when financial institutions are increasingly recognising that sustainable business performance depends not only on digital innovation and financial capital, but also on the quality of leadership within their organisations. The programme will be rolled out over nine months through successive cohorts until every manager across the bank has completed the training, reflecting a significant commitment to developing leadership capability across all levels of the business. According to the bank, participants will complete more than 20 learning modules through a blended approach that combines classroom-based sessions with practical workplace application.
Rather than focusing solely on operational management, the curriculum has been designed around competencies increasingly regarded as essential within modern financial institutions. These include 21st-century leadership, emotional intelligence, empathy, constructive feedback, managing difficult workplace conversations, and strengthening upward management skills. Collectively, these capabilities are intended to improve decision-making, team effectiveness, and organizational culture, while positioning managers to navigate an increasingly complex banking environment.
Chief People Officer Veronica Ntshalintshali said the investment forms part of FNB Eswatini’s broader strategy of creating an exceptional employee experience and strengthening its position as an employer of choice. She said organizational culture is ultimately shaped by leadership, making investment in management capability critical to building a workplace where employees are empowered to perform at their best.
“Enhancing employee experience and making FNB Eswatini a great place to work remains a key strategic priority for us as a business. To build a culture that inspires our people to be the best version of themselves, we must start by equipping our managers with the leadership skills required for today’s and tomorrow’s world of work. Culture is shaped by leadership at the top. Ultimately, strengthening our internal culture enables us to serve our customers in the best way possible, living up to our promise of HELP,” said Ntshalintshali.
The programme aligns with a broader human capital strategy that has become increasingly prominent within the FirstRand Group, where leadership development is viewed as an important driver of productivity, innovation, and organizational resilience. FNB Eswatini’s 2025 Integrated Report highlights leadership development, talent mobility, succession planning, and employee learning as strategic priorities aimed at building future-ready capabilities while supporting business growth. The report also emphasizes the bank’s objective of embedding a high-performance culture supported by continuous learning and exceptional leadership.
From a business perspective, leadership development carries financial implications beyond staff welfare. Research across the banking industry consistently shows that capable managers contribute to lower employee turnover, stronger customer relationships, improved operational efficiency, and better risk management. For banks operating in highly competitive markets such as Eswatini, retaining skilled employees and maintaining high service standards have become increasingly important competitive differentiators.
The launch of the program also reinforces FNB Eswatini’s ongoing investment in people’s development. The bank has for several years operated graduate development programs, talent mobility initiatives, and structured career development pathways designed to build leadership from within the organization while preparing employees for increasingly specialized roles across the FirstBannk network.
Earlier this year, FNB Eswatini strengthened its employer brand after being certified as a Top Employer in Eswatini and Africa for 2026 by the Top Employers Institute. The international certification recognizes organizations that demonstrate excellence in people’s practices, including leadership development, employee well-being, learning and development, talent acquisition, and workplace culture. The recognition marked the second consecutive year that the bank has received the certification, further validating its long-term investment in building a high-performance workforce.
As financial institutions continue to invest in technology and digital transformation, FNB Eswatini’s latest initiative signals that leadership capability remains critical to future competitiveness. By strengthening its management pipeline, the bank is positioning itself to improve employee performance, enhance customer experience, and create a more resilient organization capable of sustaining growth in an increasingly dynamic financial services landscape.
